Bansko ski resort
Bansko is the gateway to the Pirin mountain region and is certainly Bulgaria's up and coming ski resort. It offers an irresistable combination of high mountains and ancient history mixed with a modern infrastructure and is on UNESCO's List of World Heritage Site. With its diverse newly renovated, wide, tree-lined pistes, Bansko gives you the widest variety of skiing for any age and level. Accommodation is modern and of a high standard to what you would expect, with many hotels offering a full range of facilities. Après-ski is friendly, traditional and evolves around the "mehana" which are taverna style restaurants offering excellent traditional cuisine and live entertainment. There are a number of local shops in Bansko and a trip to the old town is well worth the visit for purchasing souvenirs. All in all, Bansko is a fantastic value for money resort.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Money
Money should be taken in cash (the notes should be new and in sterling), as credit cards and Eurocheques are rarely accepted. Travellers' Cheques are subject to a 6% commission (approx.). Visitors should change their money into Bulgarian currency (leva) as sterling is not widely accepted in the bars and restaurants. Although the cost of living is reasonable, you should bring enough money for the unexpected as it may be difficult to get hold of extra funds (eg by credit card, etc.). Credit card transactions are made in US$ and commission charges can be costly.
Borovets ski resort
Borovets is one of Bulgaria's most established ski resorts. At 1300m, the small, compact resort sits amidst thick pine forests within the Rila Mountains. The bustling resort offers many restaurants and bars providing a wide range of international cuisine as well as local dishes. There are bargains galore in the local shops/stalls and going out is extremely good value compared to home. The ski area is particularly good for beginners and intermediates and along with the cheaper prices, Borovets is an excellent choice of resort for those trying out the sport for the first time.
